Molten-Salt Thermal Conductivity (Presentation+Interview) Dianne Ezell & Ryan Gallagher @ ORNL MSRW

3 min read

Dianne Ezell and Ryan Gallagher presented their work on creating hardware and procedures for measuring molten-salt's thermal conductivity.

This is another iterated video, with the original having been released in February. (Papa! Tell me again about "The before times!")

ORNL ok-ed the interview, and so now I can include our discussion with the presentation.

Request for Captioning Assistance (grunt-work)

Anyone WANT to caption this stuff? I don't caption every video, but I see some videos (like this one) having possibly broader appeal.

Recently I've been throwing my own Gord-time at captioning because it is easy to do in small chunks, and I don't need to be at "my editing PC" to do it.

Now I've got to switch gears, do some writing, and that's the sink-hole for my flexible hours outside of the editing room.

It could be volunteer. It could be pay. Yes, there are services I can pay too. But I want to tally up a fresh list of folks who are interested and try choose volunteers / workers depending on tasks and overall load.

Germany and Japan

Translations into German and Japanese are also of interest to me. That is because Thorium 2011 (as I'm now calling it) and Thorium 2016 (the 6.5 hour monstrosity) are now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Those thorium videos are certainly more niche,  but their existence on Amazon Prime resulted in some viewing. So if you are pro-thorium, living in Germany or Japan, and would like to see a free-for-Prime-Members doc about Thorium available to your fellow citizens, please get in touch.

Frankly, whether or not I pursue German and Japan depends on someone at that end caring, and performing their own quality checks.

I live in Canada. I can't even watch any Thorium Amazon Prime uploads in Canada!

I can't watch Thorium: The Far Side of Nuclear (Myriam Tonelotte's doc) with my Amazon Prime account! Nor can I order Amazon DVD's or Blu-Rays of it to perform quality check myself... Amazon-dot-com is not shipping Amazon Manufactured disc media to Canada!

So, knowing how this impacts English-language monitoring of quality control... Takashi Kamei at 41m into doc still lacks burned-in captions! We fixed for DVD and Blu.  In fact, we submitted a fix almost immediately, as fast as 40GB of 1080P MP4 can be rendered and uploaded. But for some reason Amazon Prime stalled the publishing... and I found that out by Alan Medsker in USA wondering where the fix was.

Between that type of madness (and me only speaking English) I basically need someone to care a heck-of-a-lot, and watch the heck out of anything I upload to Germany or Japan to make such a release a quality-controlled one.

Also, if you order a DVD or BluRay... let me know how that goes? I can't get samples to Canada from Amazon. I've done everything I can to test at home, except for the whole manufactured-at-Amazon loop.

Do people actually need/want BluRay?

I've got a PS3. It plays BluRays. That was amusing 5 years ago. We own a couple BluRays. Good times.

I personally do not have any use for BluRay content... I'd rather stream everything for convenience sake.

But BluRays do allow me to stick a heck of a lot of video content on a disc. Anyone buying Thorium: The Far Side of Nuclear will get a little extra Weinberg I've not yet uploaded to YouTube. (I certainly will be soon.)

It was a fun learning experience. I think I'm pretty good now at authoring DVDs and BluRays. The authoring tool I selected (after lengthy testing) was this:
TMPGEnc Authoring Works 6
https://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/taw6.html

But, does anyone care about disc platforms?

DVDs are more widely supported in households... if you can play Blu, then you can play DVD, they just can't hold much video data.

Who cares!?! Let me know your thoughts. Let me know if there's anything I should try accomplish along those lines while I'm writing.

I can't distribute Thorium: The Far Side of Nuclear all willy-nilly because Thorium Energy Alliance has distribution rights. But I can create discs containing my own work.

Stuff can be visible-on-Amazon with Amazon manufacturing.

Stuff can be relatively cheap with Kunaki duplication.

Don't try combine the two. Middle-manning is a waste of time. If there's anything to be done, keep it all completely automated.

So, anything to be done there, with discs? In 2020?

Aside from putting hot coffee cups on them to protect the table?
