THORIUM 2017

6 min read

This is the first video to fully incorporate ORNL's MSRE documentary footage. It is tailored to help Flibe Energy specifically.

It co-exists with the following very similar video...

Trump on Nuclear Power - Revisit Nuclear Regulations
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXaDqRrPc_M

...which is exactly the same, except features President Donald Trump's recent remarks right at the start.

Both videos contain Trump's remarks, but this Trump video is my take on target marketing, by emphasizing those remarks up-front.

The "Trump" video is being tested with a tiny AdWords campaign to see how it fares with general public.

As you might expect, simply adding Trump to the start makes it a far more skipped-past video than any other video I've ever tested. But it is also unusually likely to be searched-for after the ad has been glimpsed, and added to a playlist. Some unusual behavior there, but not quite enough to make it go viral. (To a general audience, "Thorium 2017" is by-far the preferred video.)

The AdWord campaign is 1-cent-per-view, and is NOT a search-word campaign. It is, rather, show a video to random people on YouTube for as low a bid as possible. That's how I test against general public and not pre-existing Nuclear/MSR/Thorium keeners.

Back to general-audience "Thorium 2017" (that does NOT open with Trump)... the Flibe Energy emphasis isn't just the body of the video, but also the timeline at the end. For example, release of LFTR EPRI is highlighted, and LFTR49 is specifically mentioned.

This is very different from my 2016 "Thorium" video, where I tried to provide strong arguments from Terrestrial and ThorCon. While on-balance remix 2016 favored Flibe (mostly because Flibe's closing argument was sequenced last), it was meant to be leverage-able by everyone. 2017 timeline updates (eg. Trump) can only be put to practical use by everyone else, by combining them with 2016 non-Flibe assets such as the 2016's "elevator pitches".

Future Videos

Moving on, I intend to do something similar for Molten Salt Reactors themselves... emphasis the generic benefits on MSR (as opposed to unique properties of thorium fuel cycle). 2 versions, one intended for a generic audience and then another tailored for a Trump-supporting audience. (Or whatever other permutations present themselves.)

Then, continue by issuing videos specific to each MSR startup. Again, with a generic audience and then a target audience video. (Or more than 1 target-audience video, depending on the opportunities for that startup. For example, Terrestrial Energy and a Canadian audience.)

YouTube Editor - Bad News

Up until now, my intent was to do all this with public facing remixable assets to be leveraged by everyone via YouTube Editor.

So that I'd cease to be a time-constrained bottleneck, and that other folks could take a stab at communication opportunities (like the Trump permutation) with all the footage I've collected.

Along with "Thorium 2017" I also (finally!) released an instructional video and some public indexing of the needed playlists: http://thoriumremix.com/remix/

...you can see my "Trump" video was created using YouTube Editor.

Just like "THORIUM DEBUNKED" was. (And has since gone reasonably viral.)

So, this works... anyone can do some of what I'm doing using nothing more than a web browser. And it is absolutely possible to create viral videos by doing it.

In fact, my primary incentive for creating "Thorium 2017" was not that video itself, it was to ensure some essential assets were made available for remxing. I think the remixing is that important.

TR2011 opened with "LFTR in 5 Minutes" and I hadn't updated a similar sequence since... 2011. "Thorium 2017" is that.

Also, Trump's statements allowed me to bring the timeline up to date with 2017 events.

These new assets can be remixed by looking at Thorium 2017's ingredients playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuGiwaUJYEZcSEiRhT4EzHS7NszhXjxsY

...which includes a timeline version WITHOUT MUSIC. That's how I highlighted the Trump excerpt at the beginning.

Unfortunately, YouTube Editor is going away. On September 20th.

Feel free to let YouTube know you'd rather they keep it. I did tell them that. Rather doubt they care what I think, but I did let them know.

YouTube Editor was launched in June 2010. Everything I've done since then... Thorium Remix 2011 right up to 2016's "Thorium" and "Thorium 2017"... all the technical lectures, all the footage from interviews I posted... it was all under the assumption that any person with a web browser could try remix my work into new forms of communication.

This has happened. About 10x more views of Thorium and MSR related educational material are viewed on other people's channels, and not my own.

So despite being extremely time-constrained, I did still invest many hours in preparing, uploading and indexing these assets. 2017-02 was when I started uploading "Thorium" (2016) assets, and I see my last 2016 asset was uploaded on 2017-05. So about 3 part-time months just segmenting, rendering, uploading and indexing. Arggghhhh!

The biggest time-waste was Atoms. Tiny pieces. Perfect for YouTube Editor. I will not be creating any more Atom size clips, ever again.

If you want to try YouTube Editor, now is the time. The assets are all there. I rushed out a tutorial video. It is the only way to make custom Thorium/MSR/Nuclear videos from my work without installing video editing software on a computer.

Video Editing Software

Or, install video editing software on your computer and download needed assets from the following locations...

Thorium 2016 (387m) -
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B181Ezh6Cnz5VFI3T1dieXVhTk0

Thorium 2017 (34m) -
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B181Ezh6Cnz5eHNYSFdrc2xHVmc

...if you have a laptop without much storage, you'll need to be careful about what you download. If you have a desktop with lots of storage, grab it all. You'll find duplicates that are short (Atoms) and long (Chunks). You'll find some low-bit-rate MP4s (for Twitter and directly uploading to sites like YouTube) and high-bit-rate MP4s for editing with.

Of course you can Sync your Google Drive to these folders as well, but it might fill up your Google Drive if you don't upgrade your storage plan. Everyone can simply download files and folders though... there's no cost to you at all.

Also, remember the 2016 387-minute version has a searchable transcript spreadsheet - https://drive.google.com/open?id=1polwEZy7i86irlLTbtt7McCwXSYzG4NrS73po0u2Yx8

There's 2 broad approaches to editing with these assets...

No matter which approach you use, the transcript/timecodes are essential to finding useful moments.

Remember CTRL-F is the generic shortcut for performing a text search... it works in Google Spreadsheets, and works when viewing a transcript right in YouTube. (Click [...More] then [Transcript] then pause the video and CTRL-F right in YouTube.)

Next Video / TEAC8

TEAC8 - Thorium Energy Alliance Conference #8 is starting August 21st in St. Louis.

I'd planned on demonstrating YouTube Editor with these new assets. Instead I'll demonstrate how to use the Google Drive files with PC editing software.

And my next immediate priority is creating a video tutorial for this video-editing-software approach.

That should provide the long lasting value that I'd expected YouTube Editor to provide.

The new tutorial, and a generic-MSR 2017 video, are my next priorities.

I should be able to capture additional MSR startup assets at TEAC8. So making MSR startup-specific videos first would result in quickly deprecated content.

Hope to see you at TEAC8 in St. Louis.
