Kirk Sorensen - Molten-Salt Reactor Choices @ ORNL MSRW 2020

1 min read

ORNL's Molten-Salt Reactor Workshop was virtual this year. I booked 2 days off work so I could watch live, someone got a sore throat, and so those 2 days off-work were not-at-all spent watching the workshop.

I'd been experimenting with client-side recording of video conferencing. Apparently not possible on an iPhone (no audio), but easy on a laptop. On my still-awesome 2012 MacBook I used QuickTime (to capture screen) and Audio Hijack (to capture audio).

It actually took me ~5 tries to figure it out... my early attempts were recording Green Party of Canada (GPC) leadership candidates town halls, as I tried to ask candidates for a commitment to tour a nuclear power plant.

(That was how I learned my iPhone was not recording audio. And QuickTime on my Mac was not recording audio.)

Of the GPC leadership candidates, 2 did commit to visit a nuclear power plant. Those 2 candidates did not win the leadership race, but I'll see if I can get Bruce Power to extend an open invitation regardless.

So when ORNL MSRW 2020 kicked off, and I was robbed... ROBBED I TELL YOU... of my watch-the-conference time, at least I could capture it and watch later.

From what I've seen of MSRW 2020, it does sound like ORNL is intending to release the presentations. If ORNL does post most of the video's onto YouTube, then I'll be quite ecstatic. If they don't, then I'll ask participants and ORNL if I can share portions of what I have... obviously I'll never post a talk without consent, and Kirk was the first person I've asked.

Sorry this video got no TLC from me. Without a supplementary interview there's not really much to do with it. But the big upside from the virtual conference is that unlike any past ORNL MSRW I've got all talks captured.

I'll be watching them now.
