ORNL MSRW 2023: Day1of2 PM Sessions

2 min read

Much better success capturing the 2 days over Zoom than previous years... or at least a streamlined process which is taking less Gord-hours to make watchable-as-possible videos.

(I'm skipping over Day1of2 AM sessions for now... some very interesting content there, and I'll be putting more focus into how to edit some of them.)

I finally bought "DaVinci Resolve Studio", and I finally started using OBS ("Open Broadcaster Software", free).  Both are excellent tools.

The ORNL MSRW 2023 Playlist can be found here:

...and will be updated as I go. Currently there are 11 videos.

The Day1of2 PM videos I'd draw your attention to are...

Hunter Andrews: Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy LIBS for MSR Applications

Alex Bataller: Online Monitor of Molten Salts using Fiber Coupled Plasma Discharge

Capture and Editing

Using a 4K display, connect to the Zoom call full-screen. Use OBS to video-capture my entire screen. (Brute force.) While the podium footage looks like it is never sharper than 720p, the slides do appear at 1080P. So within a 4K split-screen Zoom display, that's all the visual detail ORNL ever shares, when they do eventually post (unlisted) videos to YouTube.

Experimenting with DaVinci Resolve Studio, I can Magic Mask out the wall (as seen in Hunter Andrew's talk) basically making a chroma-key where there was none. It can also track a speaker, as you see deployed in the other talks.

Premiere Pro (as part of Adobe Creative Cloud) can also do these things, but it requires 2 distinct programs to work together... After Effects and Premiere Pro. It can be made to work, but it is pretty janky. DaVinci Resolve bundles it all up into a single app, and seems to perform better on my MacBook Pro (M1) laptop than PPro did on my (more powerful) desktop.

Just as importantly, DaVinci Resolve Studio is a 1-time purchase. I'm still paying every single month for Adobe Creative Cloud. Premiere Pro is just crazy expensive. So I'm still "stuck" with it, until I get the next Thorium narrative out the door. But after that I hope to retire PPro and just use DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Flibe Energy video introducing Thorium Fuel Cycle

If you haven't yet watched it, is excellent.
