Here is the public release of Thorium Remix 2016, simply titled: "Thorium."
I'm very happy with it. Believe it will serve as an excellent platform for video communication efforts in the near future. And it stands as a respectably watchable/enjoyable video, as far as any 6.5h video can with this much information packed in.
This is the video edit, and the YouTube URL which I hope to make reasonably popular.
However, on my channel alone, as it exists today, it won't be popular enough. Indepentent video permutations have shown to propagate faster, and so next-up is the "remix" infrastructure.
I have already been working on this in parallel with finishing TR2016. (Rendering while uploading. Uploading while rendering.)
While I'm happy to be releasing 6.5h TR2016 as "Thorium" it is a video I wished I could have released long before now. Whatever impact it will make, that's an impact it could have easily made a full year ago.
I'm hoping you judge "Thorium." based on the question: "Is a portion of this video what I'd hoped for?"
That is, I don't expect the full 6.5h to resonate with everyone. It resonates with me. It is exactly my feelings on nuclear, MSR and Thorium. So I expect there's a tiny fraction of the population it will also resonate with perfectly. A very specific video for a very specific audience, and very effective at communicating to that audience.
But also, by removing parts, it can be made appealing to much wider audiences. So from the 6.5h a number of shorter videos will be created which speak to particular audiences much more strongly than any single generic 2h video I could have made.
I'll be rolling such permutations out through 2017. Here is one I created...
Nuclear Power - Visions of the Future
https://youtu.be/arhW0-owX1g
...that took me a single day to edit. I think it shows how versatile TR2016 can be... those 6.5h can be stripped down and re-jiggered in many different ways. (You'll note it barely mentions Thorium or MSR, instead talking broadly about nuclear power and advanced reactors.) Starting from scratch, that would have taken me over a year.
Anyone else who's watched TR2016 will be capable of doing the same. Even if they're not a "video guy", or have access to desktop video editing software.
Only a handful of you have been experimenting with YouTube Editor and re-assembly of "Th" sequences. But that was enough for me to get a handle on what works, and what does not. So, just as the narrative has evolved drastically since the "Th" sequences started in 2013, so to has my understanding of how to effectively enable remixing.
Still Busy
I'll continue to be very busy until you get the first access to remix tools, then continue to be evolve those tools based on your feedback.
Your support will enable me to dedicate some time to remix tools and my own personal remixes through 2017. I'll certainly be looking at creating a TR2017, but at the moment I can't imagine what the scope of that might be. I'll have to see how much support I can drum up, see how TR2016 and permutations perform, and basically re-examine that question later in 2017 once I have more information.
As you're aware, legislation has been introduced to update USA nuclear regulatory system so that advanced reactors have a shot of succeeding.
There is a Thorium Energy Alliance Conference (TEAC8) scheduled for August 21st & 22nd in St. Louis. I'll be presenting then-finished remix tools as a short talk. Obviously I want to shoot every lecture and interview people.
I've got to move my editing PC from the upstairs down to the basement. And our youngest son is about to start daycare part-time. Will that make editing easier? Will I be able to record narration even when the house isn't empty, such as at 3AM? Dunno.
But there's certainly many things I'd like to try regarding TR2017, hopefully I'll be able to start that rolling mid-2017 while other folks are busy remixing TR2016 into shorter, targetted videos. Yay for parallel processes!
If you are a "video person" and want to take a stab at that right now, here's a 56GB copy of TR2016.
If you're not a video person that might sound a bit large, but that's because most MP4 files normal people see are heavily compressed. This is not-so-compressed, so that it can be imported into a video editor, edited with, and recompressed again... with minimal compression artifacts on final exported video.
If you are a video person, have at it. Send me a link to whatever you come up with.
One thing I must insist on is this: Credit KiloWatts for the music.
My next (private, pay-walled) post will also include a discussion of music, and the very unusual situation there which will help us propagate Th/MSR/Nuclear concepts more effectively. (It is complicated.)
For now, know that Jamie Watts musical efforts must be credited in any permuation video which includes his music, such as I have done in my videos. If you include either my opening-credit or closing-credit sequence that'd cover it. Otherwise you'll have to bake in your own MUSIC BY KILOWATTS title card.
