Thorium Remix 2016 p02 v20161011

3 min read

...that's where TR2016 p02 is at presently. I've alternated between having some dedicated days to edit, and entire weeks where I barely had a chance to touch it.

Most of my TR2016 work was focused on the last 30 minutes... you'll see no missing footage there, and get a sense how it wraps up.

The VERY end is sort of a mirror image of TR2016-p01-NASA ending, but the p01 "call to action" moment ("become an engineer") will be deprecated in favor of rolling right into p02.

p02 clocks in at almost 4 hours, so the entire TR2016 is a 6 hour production.

Even still, much of my "thinking" time was me trying to fit stuff together and ultimately rejecting material.

Removed:

- Anti-proliferation arguments. (Had Dr. Stephen Boyd deliver a great presentation but it never fit anywhere without being tangential.)

- Transatomic Energy's Gord-constructed elevator pitch. (Had no interview with Dr. Leslie Dewan so not enough assets to make it watchable.)

- Much anti-nuclear debunking. (Lots to work with. A matter of picking the very best material.)

...what's left is a single narrative that still takes the viewer though MSRE's place in history, the technical nature of MSR (and Thorium breeding), and our need for abundant clean energy.

I need to supply b-roll for every moment of black screen. I need to balance audio levels... they're still all over the map... I need to "clean up" most of p02.

My free time for this has been hit-and-miss for months, and will probably continue that way. Getting it done pretty much depends exclusively on me waking up at 3am without disturbing my son, or him having a panic when he realizes I'm not there and then waking up  my wife & 6-month-old. This has gotten better recently (hence me releasing this update), but generally it has been a complete shit-show for months on end.

Exporting to YouTube

Despite Adobe's release of Premiere Pro 2016.4 I'm still having issues exporting videos for YouTube.

My final release of TR2016-p01-NASA was me exporting uncompressed MOV files as an intermediary step. Not a lot of fun for 130m of video, and here with p02 a major hassle...

In fact my upgrading to Windows 10 (which did help stabilize my Yeti microphone driver) resulted in my older copy of Sony Vegas no longer working. So yet another means of compressing video for YouTube is gone.

Premiere Pro 2016.4 also has a memory leak... despite me having 64GB RAM the only 2016.4 component I can use is 2016.4 Media Encoder (which doesn't solve YouTube problem anyway).

Adobe doesn't share Creative Cloud roadmaps, so I dunno if I'll see a 2016.5 before 2017.1. But I'm hoping whatever Adobe does ends up solving the memory leak, because I suspect the project could be much more stable under a fresher PPro release.

It is all doable under 2016.2, but it took me a while to figure out how to post to YouTube without Vegas... my upload is extremely low bit-rate and this is only suitable for private screeners.

There's also a bit of missing footage that shows up in the timeline... that's due to me NOT exporting everything uncompressed for your review... some "stabilized" footage just appears black.  Now if you hear MY voice it is more likely I just haven't supplied b-roll yet. But if you hear someone else's voice then that could very well be the warp-stabilizer bug. (Don't directly export warp-stabilized footage right into MP4. Heavens, no, do not do that.)

So I wouldn't worry about feedback on anything other than narrative and fact-checking. It is too early, particularly with this render, to worry about any moments of missing footage or shoddy audio levels. That's just grunt work (and rendering issues) I'll be chipping away at.
